Fortnite Season 4 Guide: Tips For Visiting Storm Circles

Fortnite Battle Royale

This challenge is unique compared to previous weeks. Typically, Epic Games releases one treasure hunt challenge (treasure map or searching between locales) and one scavenger hunt challenge (search rubber duckies, dance in front of cameras, etc.) each week as part of their more ‘involved’ Battle Pass challenges. This week breaks the mold. The typical treasure hunt challenge still exists, but instead of a traditional scavenger hunt, we’ve been given a survival/pilgrimage hybrid challenge. Personally, I can’t help but be reminded of Crazy King from Halo.

The goal of this challenge is to try and survive, while simultaneously making decisions that should – in all fairness – get you killed. You need to visit the centre of the storm 3 times in a single match, this means if you visit 1 or 2 then die, you have to start the challenge all over again. Experienced players can see the problem here. Running right into the middle of the storm is a great way to get flanked from multiple sides and subsequently having to restart the challenge. To compound this, each map’s storm clouds are random (to a degree), so writing a guide with specific steps is restricted. Therefore, this guide will focus more on tips to help players get through it a bit easier.

Fortnite storm clouds

First thing’s first, you need to know what you’re looking for. Thankfully, Epic decided to make sure reaching the centre of the storm was obvious and provided some audio-visual feedback (unlike some other challenges, dancing infront of signs anyone?). As you approach the centre of a storm cloud you’ll see a purple lightning bolt symbol. You need to get within about 5 metres of this symbol and it will disappear. When this symbol disappears and a sound effect plays, it mean you’ve been awarded credit and can move on.

Without further ado, here’s a handful of tips to help you get the challenge done.

Fortnite Tips For Visiting Storm Circles

1. Avoid fighting
As someone who plays almost exclusively to brawl (I’m not even interesting in winning, just “fightin’ around the world”), this was a difficult strategy for me to implement. But it works. The less attention you attract, the less chance you have of being killed. Even if you’re confident you can win a fight, you may attract the attention of someone you didn’t initially spot, which of course increases your chance of being very dead.

If you intend to try and win the game after doing the challenge and successfully avoided fighting, you’ll most likely be vastly under-equipped for a final game brawl. This strategy is essentially an all or nothing proposition most of the time. I personally completed the challenge with nothing but my pickaxe and some wood to hide in. I then promptly died trying to pick a guy with a shotgun to death.

2. You don’t need to visit every storm center in a row
I would personally recommend it, but you can ignore a contraction cycle if you don’t think it’s safe to go for that particular one. For instance, some troll decided to build a fort directly on top of the storm centre indicator.

3. If you do intend to go for all three in a row, don’t venture too far from the centre of the circle
If you go to the centre then go back to the edge, you have to spend more time travelling in the open, which increases your chances of being spotted. You also run the risk of the next storm circle being opposite from you, increasing your need to run further. The best advice here is to activate the icon, then run a distance away, build a small shelter and wait for the next storm contraction. Most people won’t come to check a random 1×1 box out in the open (better pray you have a lot of wood if they do).

4. You can get to the first storm center without touching the ground
Launch from the bus as close to the centre of the map as possible. Soon as you launch, deploy your glider instantly and just hover there until you know where the storm circle is. This happens 1 minute after the bus has dropped everyone off. Simply glide over to the centre of the circle, land on the symbol and then get the hell out of there.

5. Make sure you collect building materials, preferably wood
Not only will you need somewhere to hide after travelling to the storm centre, you will almost assuredly need some materials to deter anyone trying to kill. Unless, of course, you get super lucky and nobody manages to find you all game.

6. Solo is easier
If you don’t have a crack squad to play with, this challenge is easier solo as long as you don’t draw attention to yourself. Most people will be playing normally and as such, there will be lots of skirmishes going on around you. This means people will generally be preoccupied and not actively looking for a tussel (which is more common in squads).

These are the 6 guidelines I followed and I finished the challenge on my second attempt. Granted, it can be luck based on how the storm clouds spawn and how thirsty your opponents are. Generally speaking, if you don’t aim to win the actual match and follow the above, it shouldn’t take as long to complete as the scavenger hunt challenges it replaces.
