With season 4 of Fortnite hot off the presses, Epic Games has decided to shake-up the entire map in addition to the traditional Battle Pass challenges. There are quite a few obvious changes, such as: meteor impacts, ‘power crystals’ and new locations entirely (Risky Reels, movie studio in Moisty Mire, etc.). But there are some better concealed changes as well.
Keeping in line with the superhero theme of the season, Epic has treated us a few ‘secret bases’ throughout the map. Below is a map of the three locations I’ve currently found.
Fortnite Season 4 Secret Base Locations
The blue circle is the ‘superheroes’ base of operations, the red is the ‘supervillains’ and the purple on is a surveillance outpost/bunker that lacks the distinct theming of the other two. You might notice I’ve put ‘supervillian’ and ‘superhero’ in quotation marks, that’s because I can’t find an explicit confirmation of who owns which base. However, judging by the bases’ colour schemes (blue and silver vs. black and purple), layouts, designs and the fact one has a freakin’ rocket in it, I think it’s safe to assume which side owns which piece of real estate.
Fortnite Superhero base
The superhero base (blue circle) is located dead east on the map, located on the border of J5 and J6 on the main map’s grid. It assumes the form of a large out-of-the-way mansion with a extravagant garden out front. Not unlike how Xavier’s mansion appears in X-Men perhaps (good taste, Epic).
The upper floors are innocuous, appearing like a normal (rich person’s) house replete with bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms and a gym. However, one peculiar piece of decoration sticks out. Possibly the symbol of Fortnite’s Justice League?
The base itself lies downstairs. If you enter the mansion through the front door you’ll see staircases both to your left and right. Both of them have stairs leading down, with the left one exposing a secret passage behind a moveable bookcase and the right staircase requiring you to destroy the floor beneath it to reveal the passage. Regardless, both staircases lead to the same area.
Downstairs you’ll find the main base of operations, which sports the same symbol as the floors above. You’ll find showers, computers, a kitchen and what can only be described as a holographic communicator, very superhero-y!
Finally, at the very bottom you’ll see an underground hangar of sorts that leads to the east cliff-face of the Fortnite map (a potential entrance from the Battle Bus or jump pad). It just needs some form of stealth aircraft parked in here the superhero league motif would be complete.
Fortnite Supervillian base
The supervillian base (red circle) is located on the opposite side of the map, westward. This appears on the border of B4 and B5 on the main map’s grid. Just like the superhero base, the supervillian base is thematically well located. It’s built into the cliff-face of a mountain (just short of a volcano lair, maybe next time, Epic) northwest of Snobby Shores. The easiest way to get into this base is to simply land up here when the game starts. Failing that, building up is your only other option.
There are numerous ways in to the base interior from above: digging down, taking the stairs (like a normal person) or just jumping down the spine of the structure where the rocket menacingly juts out to the sky.
The supervillian base is larger than the superhero base, with more levels, facilities (a pool of all things) and a confusing room layout. It has its own supervillian league symbol (a purple trident looking thing) plastered everywhere, a holocommunicator like before (but purple instead of blue) and a giant rocket (unlike before) running vertically up the centre of the structure.
There are quite a few rooms littered all over the place on different levels, including a semi-hidden private chambers for what I assume is the big bad.
This base also has a hangar (station wagons in it), which overlooks Snobby Shores.
All in all this base is very cool and captures the ‘secret lair’ feel and theming of a supervillian group in all its Machiavellian glory.
Fortnite Surveillance outpost
The surveillance outpost is the last of the ‘secret bases’, located on the west end of Salty Springs in a blue house. This appears as F7 on the main map’s grid.
The surveillance outpost itself is located under this blue house. Once you enter you’ll see a staircase slightly to your right, with stairs heading down. It’s worth noting that this house’s downwards leading staircase is new to season 4.
You’ll arrive in the basement have a look around and be tempted to think you’ve seen all the sights. But this is one tricky staircase, it has another staircase hidden under it, to which the entrance of is blocked by boxes.
Break the boxes and it will reveal a hold in the floor below the staircase.
Head through the hole and just proceed down the stairs and you’ll arrive in the surveillance outpost, nestled deep below Salty Springs.
What you see in the screenshot is essentially all of it, with a small room to the left and right each. There isn’t as much here to see as in the other two bases, but of the three, it is definitely the best hidden.
There doesn’t appearing to be any defining features that dictate its owner as it doesn’t fly either of the factions colour choices or symbols. My bet is on a shadowy government organisation keeping tabs on both leagues. It is situated neatly between both and that’s all the proof I need. Or a tinfoil hat.
That’s it for the secret bases for the moment, more might be discovered later as more people play through the season 4 content. As it stands however, Epic did a great job breathing new life into Fortnite with the season 4 ‘superhero’ theme and then following through on that them with cool Easter eggs hidden throughout the map.
