New Ubisoft Collector’s Editions On Xbox Won’t Have Physical Games in the UK

PlayStation versions will, though.

It looks like the Xbox versions of the Collector’s Editions for Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs: Legion, and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla won’t have physical copies of the game itself included in the UK.

If you go over to the Ubisoft Store right now, you will notice that the CE pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Far Cry 6, and Watch Dogs: Legion only have the option of a digital download. PlayStation, meanwhile, seems unaffected.

This was revealed by Ubisoft themselves, who posted an update on the Ubisoft Store to confirm the change of plans:

“Pre-orders for Collector’s Editions of ASSASSIN’S CREED VALHALLA, FAR CRY 6 and WATCH DOGS: LEGION for Xbox will receive a digital key to REDEEM, instead of a physical disc.

Collector’s Editions for PlayStation will receive physical game discs.

The remaining content of your Collector’s Edition will still arrive THROUGH THE POST as normal.”

We have chased Ubisoft up for additional comment and will add it if/when they respond.

This is a highly unusual situation, to say the least. You’d understand both platforms being digital-only with their Collector’s Editions, but why do Xbox players get the short end of the stick? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it before.

It might be down to “The Event” we are all currently in the middle of, which could be causing manufacturing issues for Ubisoft. Taking a wild guess, I think it might be down to them prioritising which version is likely to sell the most. Either that or there have just been too many issues in the supply chain with Xbox.

Far Cry 6

As a collector, this does kind of make it a very easy decision for me when it comes to which platform to get the Collector’s Edition on, if I was to lump £179.99 on something I’m yet to see gameplay for, of course. You lose a lot of the resale value without the physical copy in a CE, so to see this does feel like a massive shame.

It would also maybe be more understandable if the Xbox versions were lower in price with there being no need to use plastic, but sadly not.

This isn’t the only time Ubisoft have found themselves in a sticky situation with different platforms of late. The reveal trailer for Far Cry 6 seemed to suggest that only Xbox would be getting 4K, which we later discovered to be untrue.

Far Cry 6 launches February 18th, 2021, Legion on October 29th, and Valhalla will launch on November 17th. All current-gen versions of these games will be available on next-gen with free upgrades.

UPDATE 23/08/2020: this change will, bizarrely, only occur in the UK, not elsewhere as initially believed. We’ve updated this article to reflect that.
