Fable Legends Beta Closes Its Doors For Good

Fable Legends

Today Lionhead Studios officially shut down the Fable Legends beta and it is now no longer available to play. The game’s cancellation was announced back in March 2016, a statement from Hanno Lemke, general manager of Microsoft Studios Europe on March 7th 2016 on the official Xbox website stated:

“After much consideration we have decided to cease development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees about the proposed closure of Lionhead Studios in the UK. Additionally, we will close Press Play Studios in Denmark, and sunset development on Project Knoxville.

“We have nothing but heart-felt thanks for the members of Lionhead and Press Play for their contributions to Xbox and gaming. We are committed to working closely with those affected by today’s news to find them new opportunities at Xbox, or partnering with the broader development community to help place them in jobs elsewhere in the games industry should they desire.”

Fable Legends begun development back in 2012 with the official announcement made on August 20th 2013. The first gameplay footage was revealed on June 9th 2014. Fable Legends was to be a free-to-play RPG set hundreds of years before the events of the original games, with the option of single player and multiplayer where all players will control a very different character in-game. If playing single, the other characters were controlled by an AI.

A tweet from developer Lionhead Studios went out this afternoon officially ending the Fable Legends development.

A message on the game’s official website went on to say:

“All of us here at Lionhead Studios would like to thank you for participating in the closed beta and being a part of the game’s development. All stories have to end eventually, but the memories of Heroic triumphs and Villainous plots will last forever. Thank you for your support – you are all Legends!”

The official website now only has the one page which thanks all the Lions and goes on to list of hundreds of names, I can only assume that these are the people behind Fable Legends’ development.

So with the game’s beta closing down, players who purchased in-game currency are receiving refunds for any unused currency.

I’m pretty sad to hear about the cancellation of Fable Legends I was looking forward to playing it as the official announcement gave it a fair bit of hope that it may be a title for the long run.
