EA Cancels Ambitious Open-World Star Wars Game

No bounty hunting for you, pal.

EA have cancelled their open-world Star Wars project, according to a report from Kotaku. The report states that the game, announced at the same time as the closure of Visceral Games, was in development at the EA Vancouver studio before being canned.

Before their closure, Visceral were working on a linear Star Wars adventure with Uncharted director Amy Hennig at the helm, but that was ditched when Visceral closed. However, EA Vancouver tried to use assets from that project to help create an open-world experience, code-named Orca.

This new game would put you in the shoes of a bounty hunter character who would explore several open world planets and take on missions from different factions in the Star Wars universe. However, Orca was a long way off, and EA executives decided that they needed to release a game sooner, possibly to coincide with a rumoured next gen console launch in late 2020.

As such, Orca has been cancelled and the studio is now focusing on a smaller scale Star Wars project instead, meaning it’s been a year and a half since Visceral shut down and we’re back to square one. In fairness to EA though, this project cancellation hasn’t led to any layoffs at EA, so thankfully no one lost their job over this. Plus, this news doesn’t affect Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order, which was announced at E3 2018.
