After this week’s announcement that Cyberpunk 2077 would be delayed until November, many began to speculate on how the game’s launch would fit into the release of next-gen hardware. Thankfully, CD Projekt Red have waded in to confirm that the game will be backwards compatible on both next-gen consoles. Check out the tweet below.

The tweet states that if you buy the game on PS4 or Xbox One, you’ll be able to play the game on PS5 or Xbox Series X respectively once you’ve made the upgrade. The Xbox Series X upgrade had already been announced as part of Microsoft’s Smart Delivery initiative, but it’s good to see Sony also extend the same courtesy.

The wording of the tweet is open to interpretation though, as some are coming to the conclusion that the PS5 will launch on November 19th with Cyberpunk 2077, while the Xbox Series X will launch later. That’s just pure speculation though. It’s entirely possible that the person who wrote the tweet didn’t want to say “when the console launches” or “on launch day” twice in the same tweet.

In a reply to the above tweet, CD Projekt Red also clarified that there’ll be a next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X owners, which will be “taking full advantage of the next-gen hardware”. The update will launch some time after the game is released, and will be available for free. Will you be playing Cyberpunk 2077? Sound off in the comments.
