After the loss of Carrie Fisher back in December, many speculated if and how the actress could appear in later films in the series. She had already wrapped her scenes for The Last Jedi and her digital likeness was used in Rogue One, but with the ninth episode not yet in production, there were questions over how they could include Princess Leia.

Todd Fisher, Carrie’s brother, has confirmed that Leia will appear in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX through the use of “recent footage after he and her daughter, Billie Lourd, gave permission to Disney.

Speaking to New York Daily News, Mr. Fisher said:

“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t. She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan–when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue.”

According to reports, Leia’s role in The Last Jedi is an important one, but little else is known beyond that.

After her passing late last year, Lucasfilm denied that Fisher’s likeness would be created digitally for any more movies in the Star Wars universe:

“Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.”

The biggest challenge is still ahead for the new Star Wars films: How do you replace an irreplaceable talent?
