Star Wars: Episode VIII, The Last Jedi, is due for release at the end of this year, but like with any Star Wars movie, fans have been hard at work trying to deduce every piece of information they can about the upcoming chapter before we’ve even had a trailer release.

Here are five things we already know about The Last Jedi.

1. Luke will play an important role

Luke Skywalker

The end of Episode VII centers around Luke, and several sources have commented that he will be the film’s “emotional entry point”. Quite what this means yet, we don’t know, but my money’s on the idea that he’s sad because his robot hand has gone a bit gross over the years.

2. John Williams is composing the score

Yes, John Williams is returning to add his musical touch to the film, so get ready for lots of tracks which will punch you in the face with space feelings. He’s already begun working, according to several sources on Twitter:

3. The title’s use of “Jedi” is plural

Whilst there was some speculation about this when the film’s title was first released in English, foreign translations of “The Last Jedi” have confirmed that the use of “Jedi” is, in fact, plural and not singular. For example, the film’s official French subtitle is “Les Derniers Jedi”, which is decidedly plural. Oh well, at least Disney let us speculate for a little while, and we still don’t know whom the title actually refers to. Luke? Rey? Kylo Ren? Jar Jar? We’ll have to wait and see…

4. The story is going to have a “darker” feel, akin to The Empire Strikes Back

Several cast and crew members have hinted that Episode VIII will be “darker” than Episode VII, which–as a fan of Rogue One–leaves me both excited and nervous. Of course, “darker” doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone will perish in space flames, but we may not feel as safe as we did during the adventurous Episode VII. People have been citing all kinds of “foreshadowing” for this new “darker” movie, including pointing out that the new logo is red and not yellow.

5. Poe should have a larger role

We don’t have a trailer just yet, but we do have a packaging promo shot!

Whilst the packaging for The Force Awakens showcased Kylo Ren looking quite menacing, The Last Jedi’s promotional images focus on the “golden trio” of Rey, Finn and Poe, hopefully meaning that Poe will play a larger role in Episode VIII than he did in Episode VII. Now that he’s back from the grave, so to speak, I’m excited to see more of Poe Dameron, and see what he can bring to the team.
