Biggest New Movies of September 2019: IT Chapter Two, Ad Astra & More

Scary clowns and space adventures await.

No offense to August, but September’s big movie releases just blows August’s offerings right out of the water. I had a hard time choosing which 5 movies should make the cut, considering the selection at hand. When movies like Downton Abbey (yes it is a movie based on the TV series) have to be left out because they aren’t big enough, you know you are in for a good month. So here are the movies you might want to make the trek to the theatres for, with Oscar worthy selections on one end, and the other blazing with mindless entertainment, not forgetting the middle ground of commercial films that will surely offer a good time at the movies.

1. It Chapter Two | 6th September 2019

The Losers Club are back in the second installment of the IT franchise, with the sequel promising to deliver so much horror and gore that you might not feel your legs when the movie is over. They have teased us mercilessly with the trailers, featuring traumatizing moments like Beverley (Jessica Chastain) getting attacked by a naked old woman and Bill (James McAvoy) being mentally tortured by Pennywise in a glass chamber. Needless to say I am never booking a clown for any birthday party ever again.

2. The Goldfinch | 13th September 2019

Of all the movies on this list, this is the one I am most looking forward to seeing on screen. The movie is an adaptation of Donna Tartt’s book of the same name, a book that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2014. The main protagonist is Theodore Decker, who was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this event becoming the stone in the river of his life, where he is changed and shaped by it. The title is significant since the one hopeful thing he remembers from that day is a painting of a goldfinch.

The trailer is absolutely beautiful, with stunning visuals made all the more poignant due to the accompanying music by Perfume Genius. The Goldfinch boasts a star-studded cast, with the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Ansel Elgort and Finn Wolfhard attached to the project.

3. Hustlers | 13th September 2019

Hustlers might seem like the female version of Magic Mike, since it involves the world of stripping, but in reality it feels angrier and more personal. While the men of Magic Mike strip and dance in order to contribute to women’s fantasies, Hustlers uses the fantasy to hustle men of their money. There is no guilt involved, just a righteous sense of how these men deserve it, especially since they are Wall Street types who spend their day doing very much the same thing.

The movie is based on a New York Magazine article that went viral, and it’s easy to see why. It is a fascinating read and gives much insight into the world these women inhabit, where the transactional nature of their professional lives (their bodies and beauty are used as distraction to cheat men) sometimes overlaps into their own personal dealings with men. Hustlers stars Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart and Cardi B.

4. Ad Astra | 20th September 2019

Brad Pitt is killing it this year with big movie releases. In July he was in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and now we have Ad Astra as his September offering. It’s hard to believe he’s 55 when he’s looking like that (cue famous Westlife song), but then again he did play a vampire in a movie once, so it might have something to do with that. Pitt plays astronaut Roy McBride, who undertakes a mission across the solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his failed expedition.

Ad Astra is 2019’s version of Interstellar, though editors of the movie claim it’s so much more than that. Editor John Axelrad describes it as a “pretty singular” film, that it “stands apart from others in terms of its approach, in terms of its message, in terms of its narrative.” With comparisons made to Joseph Conrad’s Heart Of Darkness and 2001: A Space Odyssey, it’s safe to say we are in for a treat.

5. Rambo: Last Blood | 20th September 2019

With Terminator: Dark Fate also making its reemergence this year and reinvigorating the Terminator franchise, it’s no surprise that we are revisiting Rambo’s world once again. This is apparently the last movie in the franchise, with the movie’s title giving a nod to the very first movie Rambo: First Blood, but never say never when it comes to Hollywood.

Sylvester Stallone is back once again in his role as the titular Rambo, taking on a cartel that has taken his friend’s daughter. It has been about 11 years since he last donned the persona of Rambo, and hopefully, the movie delivers a fitting conclusion to this iconic character.
