5 Biggest New Movies of June 2024 — Time to Stay Quiet Again

You'll think twice before purchasing snacks for one of these movies.

A Quiet Place: Day One
A Quiet Place: Day One

June 2024 movie season is a curious thing. If we just look at the movies released the same time last year, we had movies like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. While not all these movies were well-received critically, they were anticipated movies. For June 2024, there are maybe 2 on the list that most of the general public have been looking forward to seeing, while some of the others are more known in movie circles.

Still, there should be enough options to get us through June.

1. Bad Boys: Ride or Die | June 7th, 2024

This is for 4th Bad Boys movie. We had Bad Boys in 1995, the sequel 8 years later and Bad Boys for Life in 2020. You’d be surprised to learn that the third movie is the best received film – how is that possible when the first movie is clearly the best? Still, this reflects how much interest and traction the franchise still has, which explains why we’re headed for a fourth movie.

The premise of this movie involves Mike (Will Smith) and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) going on a dangerous mission to clear the name of their captain, whose been linked to drug cartels. I watched the trailer in the cinema – I was there to watch Furiosa – and I’ll admit I laughed a whole lot just watching snippets of Smith and Lawrence’s onscreen shenanigans. Will it be the best movie to ever exist? No, but it does promise a good time – I’m hopeful.

2. The Watchers | June 7th, 2024

The Watchers is getting quite a bit of buzz because it’s written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, who is of course M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter. The film is adapted from a novel of the same name by A.M. Shine. The film follows Mina (Dakota Fanning), an artist who gets stranded after her car breaks down in an immense forested area in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.

With M. Night Shyamalan’s movie Trap set to be released in the later part of the year, it looks to be a promising year.

3. Inside Out 2 | June 14th, 2024

When Inside Out was released in 2015, it had the biggest original box office debut in history. So it’s no surprise here that we’re getting a continuation of that story 9 years later. Whether the sequel bests the first film or not, it’s bound to be a hit. It’s an animated flick released during school holiday season, and will probably be the film that parents bring their children to see for a few hours of respite in a air-conditioned movie theatre.

In the sequel, we follow up with he original emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale) and Disgust (Liza Lapira), who have been running a successful operation, until Anxiety (Maya Hawke) shows up. They’re not sure how to deal with her – it’s a code red situation – and things are thrown into disarray even more when they realise that she’s not alone.

4. The Bikeriders | June 21st, 2024

Out of all the films on this list, this one might have escaped your notice, but I just had to include it because of the stellar cast involved – we have Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy – as well as the fact that it’s directed by Jeff Nichols. Nichols has a fantastic track record has a director, with movies like Mud, Take Shelter and Loving under his belt.

Benny (Butler) is the newest member of a Midwestern motorcycle club called the Vandals. The club starts as a place for locals to gather, but as the world changes around them, the club shifts too, becoming more associated with violence. Benny then finds himself having to choose between loyalty to his club or his girlfriend Kathy (Comer).

5. A Quiet Place: Day One | June 28th, 2024

When A Quiet Place was released in 2018, there was only one other movie doing better than it – Black Panther. This was a tremendous achievement, and yes it had a director in John Krasinski and the lead actress was Emily Blunt, but at that point this wouldn’t be enough of an incentive to drag people to the cinema. What this film had was fantastic word of mouth, with most movie-goers talking about their experience while watching the movie – the intense quiet that everyone felt they needed to exude that made all of us try to munch on our popcorns as silently as possible.

While Krasinski wasn’t in starring in the sequel, he brought in a strong actor like Cillian Murphy to fill his shoes. This movie was also one of the last few pre-pandemic movies, so for many of us it was the last movie we watched before cinemas shut down. With A Quiet Place: Day One, we’re starting right at the beginning of the invasion, with a new director onboard (Michael Sarnoski, who directed the incredible movie Pig) and a mostly new cast.

Unlike many prequels, this one would actually be interesting to follow, since the main characters are different (we have Lupita Nyong’o as Sam and Joseph Quinn as Eric), and the scale/space is also different. There’s also so much mystery regarding the aliens in the previous two movies, so it will be interesting to see how things unfold. After her incredible work in Jordan Peele’s Us, it’s great to see Nyong’o back in a horror movie again, and hopefully it will be a worthwhile trip to the cinema.
