We’re rapidly approaching that Summer gaming lull, where the well of new games begins to dry up, and huge releases become a little bit more rarer to come by. That said, May isn’t exactly going down without a fight, with plenty of new releases to tide you over. Let’s take a look at the 10 biggest game releases of May 2019.
Giga Wrecker Alt. | May 2nd

Developer: Game Freak
Publisher: Rising Star Games
Platform(s): Switch, Xbox One (May 3rd)
Developed by Game Freak, known as the team that developed that small indie hit known as Pokémon, Giga Wrecker Alt is a 2D platformer that shares quite a bit of influence with the likes of Mega Man and Castlevania. Having been available on PC for a while already, and now available on PS4 by the time you read this, Giga Wrecker Alt sees the game finally available on consoles, with new levels and modes to boot.
From our Giga Wrecker Alt. review:
“A true love letter to the platform games of old, if you are looking for a fresh challenge and can forgive its predictable narrative, Giga Wrecker Alt will be a treat for you.”
Life Is Strange 2 – Episode 3 “Wastelands” | May 9th

Developer: DONTNOD Entertainment
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One
Those keeping up with Life is Strange 2 will be pleased to see the third episode see the light of day, after seemingly months of waiting. Following on from the previous episode of Rules, Wastelands continues the journey of the Diaz Brothers as they venture to Mexico, meeting plenty of new characters along the way.
Rage 2 | May 14th

Developer: id Software, Avalanche Studios
Publisher: Bethesda
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One
Arguably the biggest release of the entirety of May, Rage 2 looks to follow up on the enjoyable but slightly disappointing FPS title that released on consoles back in 2011. With id Software partnering with Avalanche Studios, Rage 2 looks set to combine the best FPS gameplay and open world sandboxes imaginable. Plus, it’s got Danny Dyer in it, so it’s already like an 11/10.
A Plague Tale: Innocence | May 14th

Developer: Asobo Studio
Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One
Those who have somewhat of a phobia of rats should look elsewhere when A Plague Tale: Innocence comes around. This might not be the game for you. Taking place during the height of the Black Death, you play as Amicia De Rune, as she scrambles to save her brother Hugo from both a mysterious illness and the brutality of The Inquisition.
Observation | May 21st

Developer: No Code
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Platform(s): PC, PS4
While the idea of an AI on a spaceship might sound a little bit overdone at this point, Observation does things a little bit differently. Taking control of the AI itself, S.A.M., you operate a space station’s systems and cameras as you try to assist Dr. Emma Fisher and her team in completing their mission. Naturally, things go awry, and maybe all isn’t as it seems. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
Team Sonic Racing | May 21st

Developer: Sumo Digital
Publisher: SEGA
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
Team Sonic Racing was supposed to release late last year, but developers Sumo Digital decided that the game needed a bit more time in the oven before it was ready, a notion we can kind of agree with after playing the game at EGX. With a few extra months to give the game that extra bit of polish, fingers crossed that Team Sonic Racing lives up to the standard set by the previous Sonic kart racing games.
Total War: Three Kingdoms | May 23rd

Developer: Creative Assembly
Publisher: SEGA
Platform(s): PC
The latest iteration of the long running Total War series, Three Kingdoms takes the turn-based strategy action that the series is known for and applies it to 2nd Century China. It’s basically Dynasty Warriors but as an actual strategy game, not just press the attack button until 1000 soldiers fall over, so it should make for an interesting purchase for anyone who can’t get enough of the adventures of Cao Cao and company.
Layers of Fear 2 | May 28th

Developer: Bloober Team
Publisher: Gun Media
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One
The sequel to the psychological horror title from 2016, Layers of Fear 2 takes the terrifying formula and takes it to the seas. You control a Hollywood actor forced to confront new horrors during the production of a film being shot on an ocean liner. One of the key selling points is that Tony Todd, or The Candyman, will be narrating the experience, so it definitely fulfils the horror credentials.
Little Friends: Dogs & Cats | May 28th

Developer: Imagineer
Publisher: Sold Out Games
Platform(s): Switch
For a nice little dose of wholesome cuteness, Little Friends: Dogs & Cats is coming to the Nintendo Switch. We’re still confused as to why it’s not called Cats & Dogs, but we digress. Players will be able to pick from one of several breeds of canine and feline, and will have to feed them and play with them. It’s just like owning a real pet, except there’s a 100% chance you won’t find them trying to destroy your couch after you’ve left them alone for five minutes.
Blood & Truth | May 29th

Developer: SIE London
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PS4 (PSVR Required)
If you thought were done with cockneys on this list after that brief mention of Danny Dyer, you were sorely mistaken. A single player PSVR experience created by Sony Interactive Entertainment London, players assume the role of SAS soldier Ryan Marks as he returns home to find his family threatened by the local gangland villains. Instead of sitting down and talking about things, Ryan decides to blow everyone up instead. It’s basically VR John Wick voiced by people who sound like they’re in Luther, and we’re more than okay with that.
