Block On: At Least Two New Minecraft Games Are In Development

After a year of “Playing with ideas for brand new games,” developer Mojang is prepared for new projects.

Mojang, the Swedish game developer behind Minecraft, is reportedly developing “at least two all-new projects” in their lucrative Minecraft franchise. The notion that these are brand new Minecraft projects suggest they are not related to the current base Minecraft game, nor Minecraft Dungeons.

Minecraft, which along with Mojang was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion, has been a cash cow that shows little signs of aging, so the idea of branching it out into even more new projects feels like a safe business decision.

Minecraft Earth, a location-based mobile game with AR elements, had to close in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This loss didn’t seem to harm Mojang’s bottom line too terribly, as 2020’s Minecraft Dungeons reached 10 million players last year.

“Following Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons, we’re planning a feature film, preparing an epic live show, and playing with ideas for brand new games,” said head of communications Thomas Wiborgh.

As for what the new games might be, we can only speculate. Maybe a full Minecraft racing game, or yet another Skyrim rerelease, this time all in Minecraft’s voxel style.
