Apex Legends Caustic Guide: Abilities, Skins & How To Play

Our Caustic guide takes you through how to make the most of the edgiest man in all of Apex Legends.

Caustic could just about be the most underloved Legend that Apex Legends has to offer. A big, beefy lad who would be more at home in the Batman universe than the Titanfall one, he could be one of the first Legends to receive some kind of buff or tweak as he ultimately just isn’t that enticing compared to his fellow contestants in the Apex Games.

Favouring gas abilities, Caustic is one of the most situational Legends in the game. The best players are able to get a lot out of him, but due to his size and bulky “feel”, he is probably the least picked Legend of the bunch. If you’re thinking of adopting the edgelord into your rotational play, here’s the Caustic guide you need.

Don’t forget, however, that you need to grind for 12000 Legend Tokens or pay for 750 Apex Coins to unlock Caustic in Apex Legends.

Apex Legends Caustic Bio

Caustic

Real Name: Alexander Nox
Age: 48

“Before there was Caustic, a scientist named Alexander Nox worked at Humbert Labs, the Frontier’s leading manufacturer of pesticide gases. With a glut of pesticides needed to protect the growing Frontier colonies’ crops, Humbert Labs was constantly on the hunt for better and stronger formulas. Nox was one of their brightest scientists and worked day and night developing new gases. But to make sure they worked, he needed to test them on more than just inert tissue: he needed something living.

“As he toiled in secret, Nox began to see the beauty in his creations and their ability to destroy anything they touched. But the head of Humbert Labs soon discovered his gruesome experiments, and their confrontation ended with the lab in flames and its chief dead. Today, Nox is missing and presumed deceased. Caustic, meanwhile, now finds new test subjects in the Apex Games, where he puts his gaseous creations to work and observes their effects with great interest.”

Apex Legends Caustic Abilities

Caustic Apex Legends

Passive Ability: Nox Vision – an ability that really shows how unimaginative Caustic can come across, this ability allows players to see through their gas. Think of the Digital Threat attachment but related to only to his gas instead of smoke.

Tactical Ability: Nox Gas Trap – a low damage ability that’s better as a deterrent than an offensive tool, Caustic can lay down six of these at once but they are easily disabled by anyone who knows where to shoot to make them collapse.

Ultimate Ability: Nox Gas Grenade – effectively the Gas Trap but immediate and does not need to be triggered by enemies; also causes more damage than the regular gas.

How To Play As Caustic In Apex Legends

Apex Legends

As already mentioned, Caustic isn’t really a Legend who should be leading the line. Not only is this because his abilities are better suited to sitting back and luring the opposition in, but also because he is a unit that seems to absolutely attract bullets. His bulk causes him to have large hitboxes that are open invitations to shoot at, but compared to Gibraltar (an equally large lad), he does not have a shield to repel some attacks.

Therefore, be very wary of playing Caustic when in large open spaces, such as the desert areas or the swamps. His Gas Traps will be visible from a mile off, but when Caustic is inside, he might be just about the most irritating Legend there is.

The current idea with Caustic is to utilise Apex Legends’ “door mechanics” (yes, they are a mechanic) to effectively block players out — or in. Placing a trap against a door from the inside will prevent other players from coming in unless they break it down, giving you the chance to heal up or go for the revive. Meanwhile, blocking a door from the outside will cause enemy players to take damage from the trap and potentially get gassed to death — Bunker and The Pit are two absolutely deadly locations for Caustic. Worth mentioning, though, that players can disable his traps by shooting at the red ring at the bottom of them.

Don’t also forget how important Caustic’s Passive Ability is, especially when you’re facing a squad in close quarters. The Gas Traps have a seriously disorientating and slowing effect on enemy players, so if Caustic is able to act quickly, he can take them down before they know what’s happening. However, also keep in mind that Caustic’s gas can have a similar effect on his teammates sans the damage — in some respects, the Gas Traps can be more trouble than they are worth.

Caustic is a bit of an oddity in Apex Legends, one that’s hardly mained by the playerbase — there’s a reason why you don’t often see Caustic players with 1000+ kills in their banners. If you’re just starting out, consider opting for some safer picks like Bangalore and Lifeline before you come back to the world’s #1 Evanescence fan.

From our Apex Legends review:

“Even the most jaded of battle royale fans will find their interest rejuvenated by Apex Legends thanks to Respawn’s attention to detail, superior gunplay, and fantastic innovations, though the loot boxes and progression system certainly need addressing.”
