Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey: How To Mate

Discovery channel stuff right here.

They say that babies are the future. Or is it children? Small people, basically. That saying certainly applies to Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, where doing the deed and mating is almost as important as figuring out how to make a pointy stick.

Mating with another hominid will produce a baby, which you can then nurture to grow into an adult when you switch generations. However, while it is overall not that difficult to accomplish, it basically coming down to a mini-game that you will play over and over, there are some ground rules for mating in Ancestors.

– A female can only have a maximum of two children, a male can have as many as needed as long as there are fertile females.
– Elder females cannot carry a baby, but elder males can still procreate.
– Family related hominids cannot procreate, though apes almost definitely did a bit of inbreeding in ancient times.
– Babies themselves obviously cannot mate, but they can creepily watch.
– You will need a bed.

Now that that’s out of the way, you will need to find two fertile hominids in your pack.

It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, nor does it matter if the hominids are already in a couple with someone else.

Approach the hominid of the respective sex you want to mate with and hold down B to start grooming.

Ancestors

A minigame will begin, in which you must release B every time you hear a sound cue. You must successfully follow the cue four times and then a couple will be formed.

Once that’s done, head on over to a bed and beckon your mate by pressing B.

Ancestors mating

Simply hold down B and the couple will mate. All being well, a new pregnancy will flash up on the screen.

To give birth, all you need to do is have your mate next to you on the bed and hold down B. A cutscene will show the new baby playing around, but you can skip this by holding down the back button on an Xbox One controller. Time will be advanced by fifteen months once the cinematic concludes.

It’s worth bearing in mind that, depending on the amount of hominids in your clan, you can impregnate multiple females and give birth to many babies at the same time. Also remember to give the babies piggybacks for bonus neural energy.

Once you have had a baby, you can skip a generation, after which you will be able to evolve.

From our Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey review:

For a game about the beginning of us all, there’s a bit of irony in Ancestors being at its best in its own beginning before losing its way. The marvel of evolution gives way to a gameplay loop that quickly irritates without enough variety to spice it up, which, when combined with poor combat, fiddly controls, and repetitive crafting, all add up to an experience that might drive you bananas.
