No magic tricks from Randy Pitchford, unfortunately.

Gearbox’s gameplay reveal livestream for Borderlands 3 revealed about an hour of new details for the upcoming looter shooter. Fortunately, it was actually an hour of details and reveals, not just Randy Pitchford practicing his magic. Check out the first part of the gameplay reveal below, but here’s all the key details we noted down from today’s gameplay reveal.

  • Customisation seems to be a bigger deal in Borderlands 3 than ever before, with changeable heads, skins and emotes. For reference, there’s a chicken dance emote, so that’s an immediate 10/10.
  • Traversal has been improved immeasurably, with the ability to slide and mantle that’ll allow you to make your way around the environment much easier.
  • Destructible cover is a thing, which is nice. Borderlands in the past had the problem of explosions and bullets lacking impact because the environment remains unchanged, so that’s a good, if small change.
  • Claptrap is still an annoying pain in the ass. You cannot change my mind on this. The sooner he gets exploded, the better.
  • Alternate fire is now implemented, with each weapon allowing you to toggle different types of attacks. One notable inclusion was a tracker grenade attached to a pistol that allowed the pistol’s shots to home in on enemies.
  • You can punch barrels to create new hazards in firefights. It’s like kicking barrels in Bulletstorm except slightly less cool.
  • We’d have to actually play the game, which we can’t because we’re not in LA right now, but it seems like the gunplay has been tightened up. It definitely seems improved over the previous games.
  • You can revive NPCs and they can revive you, which should make solo play less annoying and lonely. Second winds still exist though, thank god.
  • Three available Action skills when you unlock skill trees. Even if you play the same character, it’s likely you have separate capabilities. Amara can hold foes in place, cast magic from afar or slam them from above, while Zane can deploy shields, teleport and unleash drones.
  • Radiation is a new element type, irradiated enemies will explode and damage surrounding enemies.
  • Each player has their own loot instance. It’s an optional feature, so you can preserve your own loot when playing with randoms and then compete for loot with friends. Levels can be balanced too, no matter if your co-op partner is 20 levels ahead of you, but that’s also optional. It’s great to see players are able to customise their co-op experience how they want.
  • Each weapon manufacturer has their own characteristics, with the Tediore guns possibly being the most insane of the bunch. Exploding guns that fire homing rockets and the classic guns on legs are notable standouts.
  • There will be more boss fights in Borderlands 3 than ever, so more chances to test your skills and more chances to earn lots of lot.
  • Sanctuary III is your spaceship and home base, allowing you to travel between worlds. Yes, you can leave the Pandoran System for the first time ever.
  • You can claim lost loot from your home base, so you’ll never miss out on cool weapons.
  • Promethea is the home of Atlas, currently under siege by Maliwan. There’s also the Calypso Twins and The Children of The Vault to deal with, so the Vault Hunters are going to have their work cut out for them on this latest adventure. There will also be multiple Vaults making an appearance in the game.
  • Season Pass is obviously confirmed, but Randy Pitchford declared no microtransactions on stage. That said, you’ll still be able to purchase cosmetics. No purchasable loot boxes at least.
  • You can get Borderlands 3 loot today if you watch streamers play the game right now with a specific plug-in, which is something. I guess.
