Aaero: Indie Rhythm Game Mistakenly Reduced In PlayStation Summer Sale

Aaero

One of the most underrated games of the year so far is currently on sale during the PlayStation Summer Sale. But it shouldn’t be.

Aaero, the maddeningly addictive hybrid rhythm action game developed by Mad Fellows Games, is currently available at a sturdy 53% discount, taking the game from £11.99 to a relative steal at £5.59. The first time its developers heard of its heavy reduction, however, was in a tweet.

Although they were quick to acknowledge that there had been a dialogue between their publisher and Sony, Mad Fellows Games confirmed to me when I reached out to them that -to their knowledge- an agreement had yet to be reached.

“The publishers confirmed last night that, while they had expressed interest in being involved in sales and promotions, they hadn’t approved such a hefty discount,” Paul Norris of Mad Fellows Games explained.

Big reductions on indies can hit developers in the pocket, but the impact the sale will have on Aaero is not yet known, as Paul explained:

“It’s impossible to say how much it’ll change things because there’s so much to consider. It will sell more being discounted for sure but also devalues the product. Because you can only ever reduce the price in each sale, it’ll limit the opportunities we have to be included in future sales and promotions. The game needs more people to know about it though, so if it gets it noticed a bit more then it’s probably a good thing. I suppose we’d rather sell twice as many at half price for this reason.”

And that’s exactly what they’re doing for the time being. Before the listing is fixed, though, it’s something that Mad Fellows are trying to embrace:

“We don’t yet know exactly what conversations the publishers had with them or how the misunderstanding happened. We’re just running with it to try to make sure it’s a good thing. Anyone that wants to grab it while it’s cheap, that’s totally cool with us (as long as you tell all your friends if you have a good time with it!)”

Aaero is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. I reviewed the game on release and gave myself up to the wubs on offer:

“Even if you don’t have a soft spot for EDM, Aaero’s infectious and addictive gameplay will keep you coming back.”
