A24 Delivers A Dark Arthurian Tale in Official Trailer for The Green Knight

"Honour...that is why a knight does what he does."

The Green Knight

A24 just released the official trailer for David Lowery’s The Green Knight, a film adaptation of the Arthurian tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, leaving all Medieval Literature professors absolutely shooketh.

The film was originally slated to be released in 2020, but got pushed back because of the pandemic, so all we’ve had for a while is the film’s teaser.

What’s It About?

The trailer goes into the opening moments of the tale, where the green knight enters and challenges one of Sir Arthur’s knights to successfully deliver a blow onto his person. If unsuccessful, the knight will have to seek him out a year later, so that he will have the chance to do the same. Dev Patel’s Sir Gawain steps up to the challenge, only to realise that the green knight still lives on.

The tale is a display of chivalry, since Sir Gawain has plenty of opportunities to give up on his quest for the green knight and save himself, but instead chooses to meet his fate head on. The green knight’s challenge is thus a way for us to see if Arthur’s knights truly live by the chivalric code, or whether they just say they do for the sake of appearances.

Talented Cast Onboard

Firstly, the cinematography is breathtaking stuff, and looks like it will aptly convey the fantastical elements of the tale. Secondly, the cast is a stacked one, with the aforementioned Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Sean Harris and Joel Edgerton.

The Green Knight will blaze its way into theatres July 30, 2021.
