"In a time when honor was everything, when courage made kings."

A24 has released the new teaser trailer for The Green Knight, and it looks amazing. The movie is an adaptation of the 14th century Arthurian tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. During a New Year’s Eve’s feast at King Arthur’s castle, a figure going by the name of the green knight enters. He challenges any knight brave enough, that he would allow them to strike him with his own axe, with the condition that the same person find him a year later to receive the same treatment.

Sir Gawain volunteers to take on the challenge. With one blow he takes off the head of the green knight, but the figure merely picks up his head and reiterates that Gawain needs to find him a year later to allow him to do the same. Essentially, it is a test of chivalry (a knight’s capacity for honor).

In the trailer, it would appear that Dev Patel is taking on the role of Sir Gawain. His head also catches on fire, which feels like a A24 staple at this point. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight always felt like more of an adventure tale to me, with a Knight taking on a quest and encountering obstacles along the way.

David Lowery’s (the director) envisioning of it is darker and eerie, but hey, no complaints here because it looks like it will be an incredible movie. With movies like Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, Hereditary, The Farewell in their repository, I think A24 has basically proven they know what a good movie looks like.

The Green Knight will burn its way into the cinemas May 24, 2020.
