With the launch of Fortnite Season 8, Epic included a pinging system that looks more than slightly inspired by Respawn’s Apex Legends: its closest competition that has taken the gaming world by storm since it launched. Judging from some odd bugs in replay mode, Fortnite may soon be lifting Apex Legends’ respawning, too.
A Redditor noticed an odd van in replay that shows the silhouette of a character above it and what looks like some kind of selection screen. While it could be something else, the mind instantly drifts towards these vans being Fortnite’s version of Apex’s respawn beacons, especially as Epic recently said that it was something they were considering. They said the same about pinging and the feature was in the game the next minute.

Respawning would actually suit where Fortnite is at right now, even if there’s the risk of the game throwing too much into the pot. Thirsting in squads is inevitable due to the health buffs a confirmed kill provides, so the ability to bring your teammate back in would make a lot of sense.
Respawning in Apex Legends works by you picking up the banner from your dead teammate’s deathbox and then taking it to one of the single-use respawn beacons dotted around the map. It has its risks (basically putting a bullseye on your back as you wait for your teammate to come back down), but also potentially huge rewards. It’s one of many reasons that Apex has done so well; its mechanics just make the battle royale experience feel fresh in general.
For Fortnite, though, I feel like it’s all just way too much going on right at the start of Season 8, almost as if Epic are trying too hard to impress. They have real competition now, but Fortnite surged ahead of PUBG because it had its own ideas that weren’t too outlandish — they shouldn’t really be depending on other developers to”give” them suggestions. Season 8, meanwhile, feels like a cartoon for hyperactive children with so much going on that it’s a little dizzying. Respawning won’t help.
