For fuck’s sake. Turns out my prediction article from last year about which game would receive a battle royale mode next was completely wrong. Hi-Rez Studios must have read it and decided to screw me over, as they’ve announced they’ll be bringing a PUBG inspired battle royale mode to Paladins at some point this year.
The new mode is being touted as the “first ever battle royale hero shooter”, so how that’ll factor into gameplay is unclear. Typically, battle royale games have you loot unique weapons and equipment, but hero shooters ensure weapons are unique to the characters. Perhaps the loot will be limited to cards, which players in the regular game equip to improve core abilities. Instead of finding a shotgun, you might find a card that increases your character’s damage with all abilities.
Paladins is just the latest in a long line of games to introduce a battle royale mode since the success of PUBG, with Fortnite practically opening the floodgates for everyone else. Since then, Dying Light, Warface and more have taken their seat on the bandwagon, with more games in 2018 likely to follow suit. This isn’t even including games like The Darwin Project, which are pure battle royale games in formula.
Whether or not Paladins: Battlegrounds (yes, that’s what they’re going with) will reach any kind of success is a different story. It feels like Fortnite had the luxury of being the first true alternative to PUBG, and now everyone else is merely trying to copycat. Still, if you’re a Paladins player, this might be of some interest to you. The Battle Royale mode will be available on all platforms (PC, PS4 and Xbox One) at some point in 2018.
