Single of the Week: Hotel Books – ‘Run Wild, Young Beauty’

If last week’s SINGLE OF THE WEEK, SOLO 45’S FEED EM TO THE LIONS, was all fiery aggression then this week’s is all fiery passion as Hotel Books tell me to ‘Run Wild, Young Beauty’. At least I assume it’s me; I’m young,  I’m wild, I’m beautiful. I suppose it could be you, but I don’t know how young or wild you are. Though, I do know that you’re beautiful. WINK.

Anyhoo, moving swiftly on, Hotel Books are an American band from Porterville, California – well, they are and they aren’t. At its core Hotel Books is the spoken word/music project of Cam Smith, a chap who is more performance poet than front man, but then again weren’t some of the best front men? I’m looking at you ghost of Jim Morrison writhing around on the floor in the corner of my room.

The ‘band’ features a revolving door line-up of talented musicians who bring a backing of atmosphere and tension to Smith’s pieces, that calls to mind bands like La Dispute and Pianos Become the Teeth at their most melodic and ambient, with Smith’s performance reminiscent of Max Bemis at his most spiky and impassioned preacher-esque on Say Anything track Admit It!!!

‘Run Wild, Young Beauty’ isn’t just a powerful performance though, it’s a great track, and more than that it’s our SINGLE OF THE WEEK.
