Developer Supermassive Games and publisher Bandai-Namco have announced the next installment in their narrative-horror franchise The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Devil In Me, which the trailer specificies is the “season one finale,” following the three other Dark Pictures Anthology games: Man of Medan, Little Hope, and the recently released House of Ashes.
Bandai-Namco have released some plot information on what sort of scares players can expect: “In The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me, a group of documentary filmmakers receive a mysterious invite to a replica of the ‘Murder Castle’ of H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer. They soon discover that they’re being watched, and there is much more at stake.”
While no firm release date was mentioned in the trailer or the game’s press release, all previous games in the series have been released in Fall, so a Fall 2022 release is likely in the works.
The trailer gives us an ominous voice over wherein an unseen character speaks rapturously about the artistic gratification of murder while we see footage of people in imminently dangerous situations. It ends with the reveal of a gristly sort of animatronic project being filmed by an unknown party.
Following previous installments’ focus on ghost ships, ghost towns, and haunted temples respectively, it appears that The Dark Pictures Anthology is looking to finish its first season with a good old-fashioned haunted mansion. The specific mention of this title being a ‘Season One finale’ also implies plans for future seasons somewhere down the line (presumably a year after The Devil In Me is released).
While H.H. Holmes was a real serial killer and his Murder Castle claimed “between 20 and 200 lives” according to biography.com (an incredibly imprecise and gruesome margin of error), he never wired up any corpses to act in art projects. Whatever is lurking within the replica of the Murder Castle in The Devil In Me is clearly a new beast altogether.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me will be available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
