Game Of Thrones Composer To Score Prequel House of the Dragon

Even if Game Of Thrones fell at the final hurdle, Ramin Djawadi still made it sound good.

Game of Thrones finale

While Game Of Thrones is now mainly remembered as some kind of cruel trick, the fanbase have always been clear on who does and doesn’t deserve the blame for that. One notable figure on the ‘blameless’ side of the divide is composer Ramin Djawadi, the man behind all those iconic house themes – and it’s now been confirmed Djawadi will be returning for the upcoming prequel, House Of The Dragon.

Is this a good thing?

Short answer, yes. Djawadi won two Emmys for his work on Thrones, and has also been nominated for his work on Westworld – but his Game Of Thrones score was so acclaimed that it became a two-year concert tour of its own. He is not the only Thrones alum to be returning for House Of The Dragon – Miguel Sapochnik, who directed many of Game Of Thrones’s larger-scale, set-piece battle episodes, is attached as showrunner alongside Ryan Condal.

House Of The Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s prequel novel Fire And Blood, which tells the story of a civil war within the dragon-liking, incest-happy House Targaryen, who were then the undisputed overlords of Westeros. Confirmed cast members include Paddy Considine, former Doctor Who Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Olivia Cooke. The show is expected to begin filming this year with an estimated release date in 2022. And, with the source material already fully written, there’s less risk of the showrunners going mad with power.

What about those other prequels?

At one point it seemed that the runaway success of Game Of Thrones would lead to it spawning an entire Avengers-style franchise – obviously, we know how that went. Not long before Thrones itself wrapped up, Bryan Cogman’s spinoff was quietly cancelled, and then in 2019, the intriguingly titled Unnamed Game Of Thrones Prequel was canned having already filmed a pilot, leaving House Of The Dragon as seemingly the one survivor of those rather lofty dreams.

There are still tentative plans for an adaptation of Martin’s relatively gentler and lower-key Tales Of Dunk And Egg novellas, but no solid details have been confirmed. And given the track record of these projects, House Of The Dragon seems very much like an exception to the rule.
