6 Biggest New Games of November 2017

CoD WWII

October was packed with new games releasing left and right, from Super Mario Odyssey, one of the year’s most highly awaited games, to the fact that somehow people were pissed off about Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. With only a days to go until we hit the penultimate month of the year, it’s time to look at what’s waiting for us on the other side with the biggest games of November 2017.

Call of Duty: WWII

Release Date: November 3
Developer: Sledgehammer Games
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One

Speaking of slaughtering Nazis, the Call of Duty franchise decided to go back to the second World War (a year after Battlefield went back to the first). Official marketing is calling it a “return to its roots”, and many long-time fans of the series are welcoming this change, having gotten tired of the futuristic themes of the Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare, although some think there’s already an overflow of second World War games.

Either way, Call of Duty: WWII looks to be set up similarly to Black Ops III, with a full game’s worth of a normal single-player mode about a young recruit facing combat for the first time on D-Day, and an additional Zombies single-player mode with a story about an attempt to recover art stolen by the Axis powers to boot. On top of this, there is the fast-paced renowned multiplayer mode that you either love or love to hate.

The general consensus of the multiplayer beta was that it was pretty good overall, some even compared it to the earlier games in the series, which are definitely words of praise when coming from a Call of Duty fan.

Sonic Forces

Release Date: November 7
Developer: Sonic Team
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch

After a very long run of 3D Sonic games generally disliked to the point where the series became a meme, Sonic Generations was a glimmer of hope for many a Sonic fan. While these hopes were still kept alive, although barely, when Sonic: Lost World came out, they were ultimately dashed by the disastrous Sonic Boom. However, Sonic Forces seems to be a return to form, with classic Sonic and modern Sonic both back in the fray, trying to stop the evil Dr Eggman and a new villain that looks like a ridiculously edgy Sonic OC.

Speaking of OCs, Sonic Forces will be the first Sonic game that lets you design your own character, for better or worse, as a third character that plays an important role alongside the two main Sonics. The demo was made available recently, but had a 1 minute time limit imposed on each level, meaning that you couldn’t get very far. Some fans didn’t like the levels and gameplay they saw in general, while others were only annoyed about the time limit. Let’s hope for the best.

Need for Speed: Payback

Release Date: November 10
Developer: Ghost Games
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One

After Need for Speed went back to the style of some of the most popular games in the series like Underground in 2015, the series seems to be going down its own path now with CGI characters instead of the hilariously bad, but still charming acting that wouldn’t be amiss in a Command and Conquer game. Following the exploits of a former street racer, Need for Speed: Payback has you trying to bring down a cartel, all the while rebuilding your crew and racing all over Fortune Valley, from Liberty Desert to Silver Canyon.

The focus seems to be on intense cop chases this time around as the cartel has control over the police force and will send helicopters and heavily armoured cars after you. If the last game is any indicator of quality, this one will be a great time, too, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Release Date: November 17
Developer: DICE
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One

Sharing a name with the Star Wars game that made Star Wars Battlefront (2015) so utterly disappointing, Star Wars Battlefront 2 will hopefully do the same. Unlike the 2015 reboot, the new sequel will not only have a story mode, but also have space battles, a feature that fans eagerly wanted from the original but didn’t get – what they did get was sadly essentially a Battlefield reskin.

Spanning the prequels up until The Last Jedi, the newest entry in the Star Wars franchise, it has also been promised that there will only be cosmetic DLC, meaning that all maps and characters will be free. However, there are loot boxes for gaining power up cards that can be used in gameplay, and although these are all purchasable with in-game currency, they are also purchasable with real money, establishing an atmosphere close to pay-to-win nonsense. On a lighter note, DICE and EA have said that they want the most powerful items to only be earnable via in-game achievements, and that they are listening to all beta feedback. Hopefully they change more than they did last time.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon

Release Date: November 17
Developer: Game Freak
Platform: DS

After Pokémon Sun and Moon, the second-best-selling Nintendo 3DS game (only beaten by Pokémon X and Y), and before the Pokémon game for the Switch everyone who owns the console is eagerly waiting for, comes Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. It looks to be an interesting pair of Pokémon games, very similar to Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, at least in terms of the legendary Pokémon from the previous games being able to fuse with the third legendary Pokémon, however instead of being a sequel, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon take place in a parallel dimension.

Already since the beginning, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon have been packed with references to the past games, and while Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon had many references to Kanto, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon even has Team Rocket popping up again for the first time since HeartGold and SoulSilver. Letting you surf from island to island, as well as literally flying through wormholes on the back are just some of the new exciting features of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, so it’s looking to be the perfect game to keep us waiting for the Pokémon game coming to the Nintendo Switch.

Black Mirror

Release Date: November 28
Developer: KING Art Games
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One

Out of all the games on this list, the least is known about the reboot of the 2003 point and click adventure game The Black Mirror, with only one trailer released, and not much further information other than the basic premise, as chronologically, it takes place many years before the original games. Although, judging by the developers, it is definitely still going to be a horror point and click game, and not some horror/shooter bastardization, it’s peculiar that we still have close to no information on the game with roughly a month left until its release.

The steam description reveals that the game will follow David Gordon as he visits the Black Mirror castle after the suicide of his father, and all the psychological terrors that come with a gothic castle haunted by the dark ghosts of his family’s past, leaning heavily on the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.

Those are the biggest games coming out in November 2017. Which are you most looking forward to and are there any games that aren’t on the list that you think should be?
