WRC 9 Receiving Free PS5 Upgrade At Launch, Xbox Series X/S Delayed

Rallying cry.

WRC 9

Nacon and KT Racing have announced that WRC 9 will be available on the PS5 when the new console launches, with a digital release penned for November 12th or November 19th, depending on your region. Better still, there’s a free next-gen upgrade for players who own the game on PS4. The news has been accompanied by a new gameplay trailer that you can check out above.

So How Is This Going To Work?

The WRC 9 release on PS5 is a bit strange, but we’re here to explain. Digitally, the game will launch on PS5 the same day that the new console launches in your region, however the retail release is a bit different. The rest of the world will see a retail release on the same day as the PS5’s launch, November 19th, while Australia and New Zealand can get physical copies on December 3rd. Lastly, America has to wait until December 8th to get WRC 9 from retail.

As for the PS4 to PS5 conversion, physical PS4 copies have a much easier upgrade path. Inserting the PS4 game into your PS5 will allow you to download the digital version of WRC 9 for PS5 once it becomes available, though you will of course need the big PS5 for that and not the digital only version. As for digital PS4 copies, you can download the PS5 upgrade from November 19th if you’re in the rest of the world, but America has to wait until December 8th for some reason.

The next-gen upgrade comes with the usual trappings, with support for 4K and 60fps gameplay, but the PS5 upgrade will also come with DualSense capabilities, as the game will use the controller’s haptic features to emulate the road surfaces you’ll race on. Benoit Clerc, Head of Publishing at NACON, said the following about the next-gen upgrade: “The possibilities offered by the new consoles have allowed us to take WRC 9 to a new and incredible level of performance and smooth gameplay, further demonstrating KT Racing’s expertise in racing simulations.”

What About Xbox Series X/S?

WRC 9 has already launched for the Xbox One, meaning you’ll still be able to play the game on the Xbox Series X/S, likely with improved loading times due to the next-gen hardware. However, the press release that came with this announcement stated that WRC 9 would be available on both the next-gen Xbox consoles and the Nintendo Switch at a later date, so be patient. It’s coming.
