Will FIFA 21 Have Cross Play?

Ahead of its release later this year, plenty of fans have questions about FIFA 21, especially following the mixed reception to 20 and its increased focus on Ultimate Team. With a new generation of consoles coming up, fans have also been wondering whether or not FIFA 21 will have cross play.

Cross play has really come to the fore over the last couple of years with many of the biggest multiplayer games allowing people from different systems to play with each other. Fortnite was one of the first games to really embrace cross play and nowadays it’s expected that huge new releases will have cross play by default.

Not FIFA 21, though. EA have confirmed that there will not be cross play in FIFA 21.

No version of FIFA 21 will be cross play compatible with each other, whether that’s PS4 to Xbox One, or Xbox Series X to PS5, or any of the other possible combinations. FUT players will be able to carry over their progress, so at least there’s that for the supremely dedicated.

This is a huge shame and likely a big disappointment for those who want to play with friends between generations, though it’s more understandable given the big leaps in hardware and architecture. However, it’s still strange that you cannot cross play with different consoles on current gen.

That said, FIFA 21 on PS5 and Xbox Series X will be a free upgrade for those who own the current gen versions. It only looks like FUT will get transfer support, meaning that those who still play Career will likely be left in the dark.

Honestly, though, the first FIFA of a new generation is usually not that great as the developer struggles to juggle so much while also innovating, so you may not be missing out this year.

FIFA 21 releases for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 6th with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions to release at later dates.
