The Writers Guild of America has more or less stayed the course with its nominations.

The Writers Guild of America have announced the five scripts nominated as best of the year in the respective adapted and original categories. For the most part, there weren’t too many jaw-droppers here, and the screenplays nominated have all been critically acclaimed, and are all in the hunt for nominations two weeks from now at the Oscars.

On the adapted side, we see scripts like A Star is Born and If Beale Street Could Talk among the nominees, but a little surprise was Black Panther, which hasn’t been at the top of the list of adapted screenplays this year as far as the race for the winner goes. Sure, it’s in contention, but I, for one, was expecting Crazy Rich Asians, to capitalize its stamp on the race with a WGA nod, but no dice.

And for the original scripts, we see Vice, Green Book, and Roma continue their road to Oscar nominations, but like the PGA nominees, A Quiet Place was also on the list. This little horror movie that could is not exactly this year’s Get Out, but it’s still shaping up to be a potential spoiler in some categories coming up. We should keep an eye out for it.

A few of you may be shaking your heads at the absence of The Favourite from this list, but it was disqualified for not meeting with the Minimum Basic Agreement. I wish I could tell you more about what this is, but unfortunately, the WGA website only gives a basic statement that scripts have to meet it, and they also give a pdf for a 711 page document that I don’t have time to read. First Reformed, Sorry to Bother You, Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, and Hereditary were also films that didn’t comply with Minimum Basic Agreement. This doesn’t mean it’s game over for the scripts that didn’t get nominated, but as last year proved with Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, it’s still a piece of the puzzle, and one that’s important, though not mandatory, to secure yourself a win.

Here’s the full list of nominees:

Adapted:
A Star is Born
BlacKkKlansman
Black Panther
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
If Beale Street Could Talk

Original:

A Quiet Place
Eighth Grade
Green Book
Roma

The WGA will announce their winners on Sunday, February 17th.
