We’re Getting A Spider-Man Spinoff Movie All About Morbius

Morbius the Living Vampire comics panel

The latest Marvel character to get their own movie is Morbius the Living Vampire, an anti-hero who most commonly features in Marvel’s Spider-Man comics as Peter Parker’s foe. This vampiric tale is being developed by Sony and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, currently has Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama attached to its screenplay.

So far, very little is known about this new film, including if it will connect to the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming, or will even be part of the MCU.

But just who is Morbius? Well, he first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 back in 1971, and his origins story is like that of many other Marvel characters: he was a scientist who, well, messed up. Dr Michael Morbius was a man suffering from a blood disease, but whilst trying to find a cure, managed to give himself a physical thirst for blood, as well as mutating his teeth into fangs. And thus, Morbius the Living Vampire was born.

Fun fact: it’s assumed that Morbius is specifically called a “Living” Vampire because of the Comics Code Authority (a government regulation that censored comics, claiming them to be damaging to children) stating that comics could not contain reference to the undead. The Code in the 70’s was quite a messy thing, and even after the CCA decided vampires in comic books were a-okay, they still couldn’t be undead (except in non-scary humour comics), and that’s how Morbius came back to life as a “living” vampire. It also just makes sense considering Morbius’ backstory; he wasn’t bitten by any vampires, he was just a scientist who made a pretty big mistake.
