Where to Watch Poor Things Online

Your December movie watching just got a little stranger and darker with the upcoming Searchlight Pictures film Poor Things. Starring Emma Stone and directed by one of the most unique filmmakers working today in Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Poor Things is already drawing considerable attention and positive reviews. Described as a black comedy fantasy, with a screenplay by Tony McNamara (who previously worked with Lanthimos on The Favourite), the film concerns a Victorian woman named Bella (Stone), brought back to life after committing suicide. Poor Things is unlike anything on the 2023 slate, with a US release on December 8th and a UK release on January 12th of next year.

Poor Things is currently enjoying a short theatrical run, but if you’re waiting for digital, it’ll be around February 2024. Let’s take a closer look at where and when you’ll be able to rent, buy, or stream Poor Things.

Where and When to Rent Poor Things Online

Poor Things will almost certainly be available to rent or buy digitally by January or February 2024 through such services as Google Play and Amazon Video. 20th Century Fox in its original form may be long gone, but Disney has surprisingly kept a steady theatrical release schedule under that and the Searchlight Pictures (formally Fox Searchlight Pictures) banners. Poor Things continues this trend, with a relatively wide release across movie theaters, and we can safely guess it will follow a similar path to that of Barbarian, See How They Run, A Haunting in Venice and others.

Where and When to Stream Poor Things Online

If you want to wait out Poor Things going to a streaming service, you won’t have to wait too long. Even better is that we know it’s going to be on Hulu, since this is where all Searchlight releases end up; UK viewers will be able to catch it via Disney Plus. While the movie might be made available to rent or buy at the same time it goes to Hulu, subscribers to the latter should have access to the film by February 2024 at the latest. A January streaming release is entirely possible, but not a guarantee by any means.

Will Poor Things Come to Blu-ray and DVD?

The question of whether or not we can expect a physical media release for Poor Things is as frustrating as that question tends to be these days. In other words, we don’t know for certain that there even will be a physical media release for Poor Things. It’s certainly not impossible, as Searchlight releases like A Haunting in Venice and Boogeyman have both received Blu-rays. Theater Camp, on the other hand didn’t, so it’s ultimately anyone’s guess. Let’s say for now it’s at least more likely to happen than not, given the prestige and popularity of Yorgos Lanthimos movies.

About Poor Things

Based on a 1992 novel by the postmodern writer Alasdair Gray, Poor Things has a lot of intrigue in its premise of a suicide being resurrected by her guardian (Willem Dafoe). Mark Ruffalo also joins the cast as what can only be described as a love interest for Emma Stone’s Bella character. The story will focus on Bella’s dreams of true equality and liberation. Whether she gets to those ambitions or not, Poor Things promises to be a wild, weird ride.
