Dragon Ball has just released the 21st movie in the franchise, entitled Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. It’s also the second movie of the Dragon Ball Super series. The film premiered in Japan on June 11, 2022, topping the local box office chart with 670 million yen during its opening weekend.
The movie will also arrive in theaters worldwide starting August 18, 2022. However, the release date differs for each region, so there’s a chance you might only see it in late September. As of now, there’s currently no available online release for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. It’s also unknown when streaming services will release the film on their sites. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero features the return of the infamous Red Ribbon Army. The evil organization has created two new androids, which our heroes will be forced to battle in the film. Furthermore, instead of Goku and Vegeta, the movie focuses more on Piccolo and his former student, Gohan.

“The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves “Super Heroes.” They start attacking Piccolo and Son Gohan… What is the New Red Ribbon Army’s objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!”

Do I Need to Watch Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero?
Even though most Dragon Ball movies are non-canon, they seem to have taken a different direction nowadays. Since the film serves as a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the first canon movie of Dragon Ball Super, then Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is also canon.
However, its placement in the timeline can be tricky. Pan is three years old in the film, so Super Hero happened before she turned four in the Peaceful World Saga. The movie also occurs after the Galactic Patrol Saga and Granolah the Survivor Saga, but they weren’t referenced since they were made in parallel with the film.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is also the first Dragon Ball film to properly explore 3D animation. Director Tetsuro Kodama said that they have a mission to break new ground and help cultivate new fans, so they shifted animation styles. The change was met with mixed reactions from fans, so Toei Animation has to prove with this movie that the shift was the right decision.
