No Man’s Sky might be on life support, but that doesn’t stop people from thinking up new ways to take its premise and spin it on its head. First we had NMS as a top-down adventurer, now comes something far more beautiful and life-affirming.
A procedurally-generated Mario game called DMCA’s Sky.
Well, not quite Mario, because if you couldn’t already tell by its name, Nintendo didn’t exactly adore the idea and ordered a takedown strike.
As developer ASMB explained:
“Due to a copyright claim by Nintendo we’ve had to take the game down.
“Thanks everyone for playing and enjoying our little fan game. We would love to see an official Nintendo game in this style — a Mario Galaxy-style game in 2D within a procedurally-generated universe.”
Not wanting to let the assets for No Mario’s Sky go to waste, ASMB almost immediately rebirthed it as DMCA’s Sky with a few pretty noticeable changes. Mario is now Spaceman Finn in search of Princess Mango, who is basically Princess Peach:
“Featuring crazy Moombas, An Infinite Universe, Muscle, Amazing Physics and a Radical Space Ship; DMCA’s Sky is the hackneyed remake-gone-mashup you’ve been craving.”
Interested? You can try the game here, but be careful as it’s the internet and you know what people are like.
Nintendo are getting a bit of a reputation for being ruthless with their copyrights. Pokemon Uranium and the Metroid 2 remake went the same way as No Mario’s Sky, but the biggest “victim” is probably Super Mario 64 HD. Although they are well within their rights, it would be cool to see Nintendo work with these creatives instead of silencing them, but hey, welcome to the real world.
