Want More Overwatch Maps? Jeff Kaplan Says Six Are In Development

The longevity of any game is determined by how current its content is, something that the guys at Blizzard seem to be fully aware of. Since launch, Overwatch has had semi-regular updates and events, including new Heroes and maps. We could be about to see many more of the latter.

Speaking over on the forums, game director Jeff Kaplan shared plans for three new maps to be released for the game before the end of 2017:

“We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are “standard” maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year.”

And he isn’t done there. They are also working on three other maps, though the actual purpose of these maps isn’t entirely clear.

“We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won’t go in QP/Comp). We also have a few other experiments going on.

“Hopefully this will satisfy some of what you’re looking for. We want to play on these maps as badly as you guys do. We’ll work as fast as we can!”

While some may grumble that Overwatch isn’t updated nearly enough compared to something like Rainbow Six Siege, it’s worth mentioning that all added content comes free of charge. Overwatch has sustained itself post-launch with solid, continuous sales and cosmetic microtransactions.
