Valve Reportedly Developing New Half-Life For Steam Deck

Gordon Freeman might ride again in a new form, aimed at Steam’s new console.

Half-Life 2

Valve News Network content creator Tyler McVicker has revealed that Valve is developing a new Half-Life project, under the codename Citadel, which they are designing specifically with the Steam Deck in mind.

Citadel, according to McVicker, will be an FPS/RTS hybrid that has connections to the Half-Life franchise. Citadel’s gameplay will apparently be a combination of if “Left 4 Dead, Alien Swarm, an RTS, and Half-Life [were] all having a baby.”

In a video uploaded to his youtube channel, McVicker also revealed that Citadel’s controls will be specifically tailored for the upcoming portable Steam Deck console.

McVicker also says that, initially, the game that would be Citadel was conceived to include a “VR asymmetric co-operative component.” He also says that Citadel, in whatever final form it takes, will be ready for players “within the next year-and-a-half to two years.”

Last year’s VR exclusive Half-Life: Alyx was the most recent entry in the Half-Life series, coming 13 years after 2007’s Half-Life 2 Episode Two. It was critically lauded, and this acclaim might have encouraged Valve to return to Half-Life sooner rather than later.

Citadel has not yet been officially announced by Valve, though McVicker’s association with Valve does give his comments more credence. The Steam Deck itself has been delayed to 2022 due to global supply chain issues.
