Top 10 Most Tearjerking Films for Guys

glass case of emotion
6. The Green Mile

The celluloid equivalent to watching your slow but lovable dog walk himself off a cliff, The Green Mile holds no punches from the word go.

That man Hanks turns up again in The Green Mile to break hearts and flip a switch with devastating effect. There must be something about him that turns grown men into hairy babies but it’s a career-defining performance from the late Michael Clarke Duncan which really sends tear ducts into overdrive.

As the wrongly accused gentle giant John Coffey, Duncan plays the role with such decency and morality that you are willing to overlook the awkward supernatural elements of the film. When Coffey’s time on Death Row comes to an inevitable end, his begging to not be put in the dark also brings an inevitable end to all men’s manlinesss.

5. Marley and Me

“Oh Marley, you crazy. You’re looking a little leggy there, Marley. Marley? MAAAAAARLEY.”

When people watch films starring Owen Wilson, sadness is not often the feeling that prevails at the ending. A feeling of shame, sure, but definitely nothing too morose. Then Marley and Me happened.

Dogs dying on-screen is never a good thing for your testosterone levels (I Am Legend nearly made this list for that reason) and when a whole movie is dedicated to having you fall in love with this fun-loving, misbehaving dog, his death always hits hard no matter how many times you watch it.

Wilson delivers an absolutely devastating monologue (believe it or not) in the film’s final minutes as Marley lies quietly and slowly drifts off to the eternal sleep. Killer.
