Tom Hanks in Talks to Play Geppetto in Live-Action Pinocchio

Much like the choice of Hanks to play Mr Rogers, this seems fairly apt as well.

According to Deadline, Tom Hanks is in early negotiations to play Geppetto in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Pinocchio. Disney doesn’t seem to be slamming the brakes on the remake train, with this live-action Pinocchio being one of the many that is being planned for.

The original Pinocchio was actually the second animated film Disney released back in 1940, arriving three years after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The animated film tells the story of woodcarver Geppetto, who creates a boy out of wood. After being magically brought to life by a fairy, Pinocchio undertakes a challenging journey to become a real boy.

Pinocchio is certainly one of the most adapted tales. Currently, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Torro is working on a stop-motion adaptation of his own, so Disney’s decision to move forward with this might not exactly be good timing. But this remake has been in Disney’s plans for years, only moving forward now due to the steady presence of Robert Zemeckis at the helm, who appears to be close in getting Hanks to play the character.

Zemeckis and Hanks have worked together before on Forrest Gump and The Polar Express. Hanks has apparently expressed a desire to commit to the role after reading the script that Zemeckis co-wrote, so it is likely we will get a confirmation some time soon.
