The Boondocks: Season 5 – Everything You Should Know

The Boondocks
The Boondocks

The Boondocks’ Freemans are right up there with the Simpsons and the Griffins when it comes to late-night adult sitcom families. Huey, Riley, and Robert, although not your traditional family structure of parents and children, are just as hilarious and iconic, with the show being recognised as one of the greatest animated shows ever made.

The four-season run from 2005 to 2014 gave the show a humongous following. Because of its popularity, in 2019, a reboot was announced. So when will this reboot, or The Boondocks: Season 5 be released? Here’s all you need to know.

When Is The Boondocks: Season 5 Being Released?

This is a hard pill to swallow, but The Boondocks: Season 5 is now canceled. It was supposed to come out sometime in 2022, but by February 2022, the show was already canceled. Cedric Yarbrough, the voice of Tom DuBois and Colonel H. Stinkmeaner himself, revealed the cancellation of the reboot on a podcast.

The reason for the cancellation wasn’t officially revealed, sadly. However, many speculate that the death of John Witherspoon, the voice of Robert Freeman, was the deciding factor. Witherspoon passed away on October 29, 2019, right in the middle of The Boondocks: Season 5’s production.

What Could The Boondocks: Season 5 About?

Since The Boondocks is a sitcom, there isn’t really much of a plot to predict here. Fans can expect the usual amount of shenanigans from Huey and Riley, with Grandad Freeman freaking out after them.

Also, as mentioned above, The Boondocks: Season 5 won’t actually be a continuation of the series. Since it was meant to be a reboot, it would probably reintroduce the characters for a whole new generation of viewers. A lot of episode concepts from the first seasons would’ve also likely been recycled for the new series.

It would have been fantastic to see some older scenes reanimated with today’s technology. Aaron McGruder, the creator of The Boondocks, probably also had some fresh ideas for the reboot that, sadly, now won’t come to light.

Which Studio Could Make The Boondocks: Season 5?

The Boondocks underwent a couple of producer and animation company changes throughout its run. Seasons 1 to 3 were co-produced by Adelaide Productions and Rebel Base Productions. Dong Woo Animation and JM Animation animated Season 1, while Moi Animation animated Seasons 2 and 3. Studio Mir was the sole producer and animator of Season 4.

Although The Boondocks: Season 5 got canceled, details of its production were already public by the time of cancellation. It was meant to be co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Rebel Base Productions.

Sony Pictures Animation was founded in 2002 and is incredibly well-known for its animated movies like Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and Peter Rabbit.

As for Rebel Base Productions, The Boondocks is the only show they’ve produced. They did an amazing job with the first three seasons, and hopefully, fans can see more of their work in the future.

Where To Watch The Boondocks

The first four seasons of The Boondocks are available on HBO Max, Adult Swim, Spectrum, and DIRECTV.

The Boondocks: Season 5 was already set to launch on HBO Max, so if they ever decide to pick it back up, that’s the service to watch out for.
