Take-Two Interactive recently held an earnings call to talk about their financial success over the past, including the continued growth of the GTA series, and their plans for the future. According to a report from VGC, one of those plans includes a new Gearbox franchise launching in the next 12 months.

Gearbox Are Launching A New Franchise?

In the presentation created by Take-Two, the strategy section mentions a planned 21 games will be launching within in the 2022 fiscal year. 6 of these will be re-releases or new iterations of previously released titles, 10 will be mobile games, there’s one labelled as “independent” and the last 4 are “immersive core” games.

The report from VGC states that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick mentions that two of those games in that core category will be from “proven” franchises, while the other two are new franchises. Gearbox’s new game, which was also mentioned elsewhere in the call, likely fits into this category.

Didn’t Gearbox Merge With Embracer Group?

Embracer Group acquired Gearbox back in February for a deal that reportedly cost around $1.3 billion, and was a move that Take-Two supported at the time. However, they clarified that Take-Two would remain the publishers of the Borderlands franchise, along with other projects that were currently in production.

A statement from 2K, which was sent to Videogamer.com, reads: “As the proud publisher of the Borderlands franchise, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and this exciting new chapter for their organization. The merger does not change 2K’s relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world.”
