Stray is an upcoming game developed by BlueTwelve Studio, a small team from southern France, and published by Annapurna Interactive. The game is an outlier from the list of to-be-released AAA games but is gaining significant traction for its unique hook: playing as a cat.
Taking the role of a stray cat, Stray takes you on a cyberpunk adventure through a dystopian world. The game has captured the hearts of many gamers and is making quite a lasting impression before its release.
While PlayStation has confirmed the game’s release for PS4, PS5, and PC, Xbox users have been left in the dark on whether Stray will end up on their platform. As a timed console exclusive, it is likely that eventually, Stray will make its way to Xbox Series X & S and Xbox One.
What Is Stray?
Stray takes players on a third-person perspective cat adventure, which is a fairly unique storyline for a game to have. The cat finds themself in a dystopian world that’s run by robots and wants to find their way back to their family.
Players will engage with the environment as the cat, climbing and sneaking their way through the scenery. While it may not be as action-packed as some other mainstream games, it sure is incredibly adorable and has a striking visual art style.
Along your adventure, you will meet a drone named B12. The drone will assist you in translating the robot language and storing and using items throughout the world.
There doesn’t seem to be any other cats in the game, but the robots aren’t necessarily concerned that there is a small feline walking amongst them. They have far more important issues, such as their creepy enemies, the Zurks, who resemble the face-hugging aliens from the movie Alien.
This game is best described as an adventure-puzzle game with minimal platforming included. It does not seem all that difficult, but it looks super fun and interesting.
Stray Xbox Release Date
Stray’s official gameplay trailer, which was released in July 2021, disclosed a launch set in early 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. However, this release was ultimately delayed until the summer 2022.
The PlayStation trailer for Stray included a small disclaimer at the bottom that confirmed the game was a PlayStation console exclusive for a limited amount of time. The disclaimer states that Stray is a “console exclusive for a limited time.”
Stray is a timed exclusive for PlayStation consoles, which means exclusivity could last from three months to a year, though the latter timeframe is the most likely. It’s safe to assume that Stray won’t be released on Xbox platforms until 2023 at the earliest. There is no definitive information on an Xbox for either Xbox Series X & S or Xbox One release currently.
In the future, Stray will likely be available on Xbox Series X & S, Nintendo Switch, or both, although the graphics make a Switch release unlikely. Xbox users should not lose hope for Stray to come to their console eventually, perhaps even as part of Xbox Game Pass.
