Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story Looks Magnificent

And that's magnificent in all caps.

West Side Story

20th Century Studios just released the official teaser for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, and holey moley does it look good.

The cinematography is breathtaking, and everything looks so authentic to the original Broadway musical. It was a mere 90 seconds, and there was nothing said, but I felt so much. This teaser made its debut at the Oscars, which is truly clever marketing – what better way to ensure your movie becomes synonymous with the Oscars before it is even released?

I’m not even mad though, because I can safely say this movie looks like it’s surely going to be an Oscar contender. Spielberg is probably one of the most consistent directors of our time; there hasn’t been a movie of his I haven’t liked, so the odds are good with this one.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Spielberg spoke about West Side Story being the “one haunting temptation that [he has] finally given in to”. The cast album from the 1957 musical was Spielberg’s first encounter with popular music, and he just fell in love with it. Spielberg feels the story still has resonance in our time today.

He said: “I really wanted to tell that Puerto Rican, Nuyorican experience of basically the migration to this country and the struggle to make a living, and to have children, and to battle against the obstacles of xenophobia and racial prejudice.”

The only thing I’m mad at is that we will have to wait until December 10, 2021 to see it.
