Steam: How to Check How Many Wishlists A Game Has

While there’s social media, previews, and all sorts of other coverage for a brand new game that can give you a general idea, it can be hard to know exactly how popular a game will actually be once it launches. Just look at Baldur’s Gate 3, which nobody expected to be quite as big as it was when it fully launched. If you’re on Steam, the best metric to follow is wishlists, and how many people are following news for a game. Luckily, there’s even a couple of ways to look up how many wishlists a game has.

The most official way of doing this is to go and check out Valve’s official charts for the most wishlisted games on Steam that show which are the most popular games that are yet to release. Unfortunately, this doesn’t come with a specific number of wishlists for each game.

For that, you’re going to want to head over to SteamDB, an unofficial website for tracking Steam data but one that is highly reputable. Here, you can see how many followers/wishlists over 2000 games have on Steam. As of this writing, Hollow Knight: Silksong has over 262,000 wishlists on Steam and is the most wishlisted game.

You can search for a specific game if you need to, or even order by least popular games if you’re up for feeling a bit sad about the prospects of some games. You can also see the trends of popularity for certain games by checking how many wishlists they’ve had in the past week. For instance, even though it’s just about the most suspicious game ever, 4000+ people have wishlisted The Day Before recently, which is also the third most wishlisted game on Steam.

This is a really neat way of figuring out the popularity of a game ahead of launch, particularly if it’s multiplayer — nobody wants to buy a game that is immediately dead. It’s also interesting to see the variety of games that are most in demand, but survival and extraction games constantly tend to be near the top of most charts.
