Steam Players Are Loving Apex Legends So Far

And it's all because of no Origin.

Following its long-awaited release on Steam on November 5th, players are seemingly flocking back to the game on PC — and having a whale of a time.

Previously only available on PC through Origin, Apex’s inclusion on Steam has seen it rise into the top 10 most popular games on the platform with Very Positive ratings from 7,405 reviews at this time of writing.

What The Apex Steam Reviews Are Saying

A good proportion of the reviews so far are just memes (as is the way), but there’s one thing that keeps popping up over and over again as a positive: no need for an Origin account. Typically, EA games on Steam require Origin, which somewhat misses the point, so it makes sense that Steam users are embracing this change.

no_youu’s essay-like response sums it up pretty well with it getting 4576 helpful votes:

“doesnt launch with origin”

A lot of the other reviews echo the same sentiment, as well as praising the general feel of Apex thanks to Respawn’s killer movement system. Season 7 is also bringing with it just a whole host of changes (including a new map), so even people who are emigrating from Origin have plenty to be excited about.

Is Apex Legends On The Up Again?

Apex Legends

First off, it’s pretty important to note that Apex Legends has never veered close to being a “dead game” like so many Twitter weirdos like to proclaim. It just couldn’t sustain abnormally high player figures at launch, which few games can. It’s still played far and wide.

But yes, it does seem like its addition to Steam could work wonders for its ongoing popularity, especially as so many PC players are adverse to Origin as a platform. Let’s not also forget the next-gen consoles and a Switch version still to come.

That Battle Pass, Though…

However, the game’s community isn’t entirely happy with Season 7 and a lot of that comes down to its objectively terrible Battle Pass. The game’s social media channels, especially Reddit, are being lit up by disgruntled fans who have crunched the numbers and figured out that the Battle Pass’s bizarre new star system requires twice as long to level up as previously with challenges also being harder to complete.

Respawn have since tweaked the XP requirements, but the community still believes it’s a backwards step. Apex’s Battle Pass has always been among the grindiest out there each season, demanding a huge time commitment to reach max level without paying for extra tiers, so adding extra hurdles has understandably not been received well. As someone who couldn’t find even a fraction of the time needed to get through the Season 1 Battle Pass (still the worst Battle Pass of any game ever made, by the way), I am not exactly swayed by it getting even harder.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
