Star Citizen’s Latest Development Diary Takes Us Around The Verse

We still have no idea when Star Citizen, the massive $148 million budget crowdfunded game from developer Cloud Imperium Games and director Chris Roberts, will be released, but a new video was released on the game’s YouTube channel which gives an overview of how development is currently progressing.

Firstly, the 39 minute video gives us a look at both the shooting mechanics and the close quarters melee combat, before showing us how the player interaction system is coming along, and it looks pretty damn sweet.

Star Citizen’s development has been plagued with problems from day one, including a case in which a backer received a $2550 refund after getting the L.A. Attorney General involved, and a series of controversial articles published in The Escapist accused the developers of embezzlement, which were subsequently removed after Cloud Imperium threatened legal action. In any case, a ton of gameplay footage has been released, so it would appear that they’re pretty far into development.

The single-player campaign of Star Citizen will be titled Squadron 42 and will feature a huge A-list cast including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Rhona Mitra, John Rhys-Davies, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, Jack Huston and Liam Cunningham. Sounds like we should be in for one incredible cinematic experience when the game finally becomes available. If the developers are being honest with us, it would appear that things are going smoothly, so with any luck we should be hearing news of a release date soon.
