Spider-Man: Miles Morales Is An Expansion Coming To PS5

"An expansion and an enhancement to the previous game."

One of the biggest announcements from last night’s PS5 reveal was the confirmation of the next instalment in Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, which will focus on Miles Morales. Many believed it to be a fully-fledged sequel, but it would appear that Miles Morales will be an expansion instead.

The news comes from Simon Rutter, EVP Head of European Business at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who confirmed to The Telegraph (behind a paywall, but here’s the VGC link) that Miles Morales will both be an expansion to 2018’s smash hit, along with a remaster of the base game: “I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game.”

Rutter added: “There’s a substantial Miles Morales component – which is the expansion element – but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.”

The thinking is that releasing an enhanced version of Spider-Man onto the PS5 will allow PS4 players to get a full sense as to how the PS5 hardware improves on the previous generation. Unfortunately, those improved loading times will likely mean we’ll have to say goodbye to those cute transition cutscenes on the train whenever you fast travel.
