As well as a release date announcement of October 20th, 2023 that was first revealed at Summer Games Fest, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s different editions have been revealed. As has become tradition with Sony’s first-party games, the Collector’s Edition of the game doesn’t feature a physical disc.

Here’s what you get in Spider-Man 2’s Collector’s Edition:

– Digital Deluxe Edition Game (10 unique suits, photo mode items, 2 skill points)
– Steelbook Display Case
– 19-inch Collector’s Edition Statue
– Pre-Order Bonuses (2 early unlock suits, Web Grabber Gadget, 3 Skill Points)

The Collector’s Edition will run quite the staggering $229.99 / £219.99/ €249.99/ Â¥31,790 and will first be available for pre-order from PlayStation Direct in United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Austria, Spain, and Portugal starting at 10AM local time on June 16th, 2023. Other retailers for other markets will be announced in due course.

It’s hard not to be really disappointed by Sony yet again only half-supporting their physical fans, as there’s not even a physical Deluxe Edition for what’s almost certainly going to be the biggest PS5 game of the year. The trend of not properly supporting physical releases was started with Horizon Forbidden West, continued with God of War Ragnarok, and now seems to be carrying on with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

It’s not a stretch to say that it just doesn’t feel like a true collector’s edition without an actual disc, as there’s actually very little to collect here once you redeem the deluxe items. You’re effectively collecting a statue and steelbook for a game that you will have to buy again physically to actually put a disc in. It continues to just be an absolute baffling decision, as while, yes, there are plenty of digital only PS5 owners out there, physical collectors are the people most likely to buy this. And, again, you’re buying a steelbook with nothing to put in it. Your used code slip, maybe?

Here’s hoping Sony begin to change their tune with these editions, as it’s hard not to feel like there’s some serious short-changing going on. But with the rumours of a detachable disc drive for the PS5 difficult to ignore, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we see a digital only AAA game from them at some point in the future.
