In an interview with Inverse, Sky High writer Mark McCorkle mentioned that he believes Disney+ would be a good platform for the sequel. As to whether or not a sequel gets made, the fans need to make themselves heard if they are in support of this.
He said: “To me, it’s a very natural fit for Disney+, and over the years we always thought maybe a sequel could happen one of these days. There was always a belief that this was a rich enough world to keep going with new ideas. At least [Director] Mike [Mitchell] seems to believe it. I guess if the film still has that same affection of people watching it and streaming it on Disney+, who knows. Maybe if the people speak, their wishes will be answered.”
Sky High was centered on a superhero family sending their son to school to learn to become a hero – Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston were the parents, Michael Angarano played their son, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ended up being the villain.
There were actually plans for a sequel, but it never gained traction. In 2019, director Mike Mitchell, while promoting his new movie The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, he told io9: “I am hugely proud of it and they should make it a franchise. In fact the same writers that didn’t get credit on it, [Jonathan] Aibel and [Glenn] Berger, they did a lot of writing on that film, and we have a whole sequel that’s called Save U [which stands for] Save University.”
Obviously, Disney has little interest in a sequel, so McCorkle is hoping that fan interest online might steer things in a positive direction. I mean, Zack Synder’s cut of Justice League becoming a reality all started with an online petition by a fan in 2017, that garnered over 179000 signatures, so fan interest can go a long way to getting something achieved.
Sky High is currently streaming on HBO Max.
