Single of the Week: Bloodflower – ‘People/Places’

Not toot our own cultured vulture horns, but we’re good to you. However, it’s not just us CULTURED VULTURES that are damn fine to you, it looks like 2015 is shaping up to be a damn fine year too. The evidence is all here for both of those statements; there’s the music that we and the year 2015, as a collaborative effort, have in store for you – as can be seen HERE and HERE.

It’s not just what’s in store for you though, as can be seen through our previous two SINGLES OF THE WEEK this year (JESSIE WARE and ASTRONAUTS), 2015 has already been more than generous with its musical output so far and we’re not even out of January yet. Then, as luck would have it, the gods of music look down upon us kindly again with this week’s Single of the Week; ‘People/Places’ by Bloodflower.

Sharing their name, in the singular form, with The Cure’s album Bloodflowers is always going to be a good sign, and a valid good sign it is too. Bloodflower are long time friends, and now musical collaborators, Jonnie Owen and Tom Manning – artist and producer respectively. The pair have been keeping things pretty tight to their chests and gradually teasing out their releases so far – it’s cruel, but it works.

Each release has been a pristine-perfect example of electronically infused pop that simultaneously brings to mind classic synthpop and New Wave as it does ultra-modern electronica through exquisite production, pulsing rhythms, intricate synth lines and sequences, catch hooks, underlying tense atmospheres, layers of magic, and passionately yearning vocals. Their latest single ‘People/Places’ is no different and is as likely to get dancefloors filling as it is explode in a live setting.

Single of the Week no question, and a duo to keep your eye on all year. Big things for big sounds.
