Single of the Week: Astronauts – ‘In My Direction’

in my direction

Way, way back in the long, long ago, the before times if you will, of PULSE: NEW MUSIC YOU NEED IN 2015 we CULTURED VULTURES predicted that Astronauts would be one such example of new music you’d need in 2015. Then, low and behold, here we are in 2015 and Astronauts have only gone and bagged SINGLE OF THE WEEK with their latest, ‘In My Direction’, off of their debut album Hollow Ponds. I still love that cover photo.

A self-fulfilling prophecy? No, and you can shut your damn mouth. Only to be able to hear ‘In My Direction’ better of course, for it is the best single available to you this week. You can hold me to that, and feel free to mouth off if you disagree. Astronauts is the latest project from musician Dan Carney, whose previous projects have included Dark Captain (and Dark Captain Light Captain). He is not the Dan Carney who co-founded Pizza Hut alongside Frank Carney, if that’s what you were thinking for some reason.

Hollow Ponds is a brilliant album-shaped amalgamation of folk, indie, pscyhedelia, alt, and elements of post-rock. ‘In My Direction’ is a perfect example of this as looped beats lay the groundwork for a hypnotic and hazy folk that sounds like Radiohead meets Elliott Smith before it slowly fills out with fuzz and builds tension within the confines of its core repetition. The video takes the strangeness of the song itself and runs with it, or strides really, as it follows the route of a man going in his own direction sporting an expression of intense… something.
