Should Edge Win The 2021 WWE Royal Rumble?

On this day!

During this week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, ‘The Rated R Superstar’ confirmed his entry into the 2021 Royal Rumble match, exactly a year on from his triumphant return at the last Rumble pay-per-view. Edge has been on the sidelines since sustaining an injury at Backlash in his match against Randy Orton.

Most of the WWE Universe had assumed that when Edge was ready to return (again) that he’d be heading straight for a shot at the WWE Championship, potentially around WrestleMania season. Although that could still happen, Edge must first run the gauntlet of the Royal Rumble match.

When thinking of potential winners for this year’s Rumble, Edge was at the fore-front of many predictions, including our own. The storyline writes itself, with Edge completing his comeback with a huge upset win over today’s champion, and what a way to score such an opportunity by winning the 30-man battle royal. Although, might this not have been the best course of action at last year’s event? The one where Edge shocked the world and broke headlines in minutes of emerging from the smoke and lighting the world on fire?

Call me a cynic, but I personally don’t believe Edge is worthy of that championship win just yet. Yes, he’s proved a lot of doubters wrong in that he can still put on excellent matches, when paired with the right opponent. In a Royal Rumble environment, wrestlers who might get blown up or outmatched by today’s much faster and flashier superstars can easily slip into the background and perform for half hour straight, but when put under the spotlight of a marquee main event, they can sometimes falter.

Especially now that Edge’s body has bit back after wrestling a 30+ minute match, it leads me to wonder whether Edge is the right superstar for us to get behind heading into WrestleMania season. After all, this is the time of year when we want to see the dawning of new stars and matches that live on in history, the last thing it deserves is a match that just doesn’t meet the hype because of a badly timed spot or yet another injury.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate Edge a lot and seeing him compete in 2021 is still mind-blowing, but I don’t think he is the right person to win the 2021 Royal Rumble. Of course, it’ll be great to see him hit a few spears and maybe even make it to the final four, but there are plenty of other stars more capable of holding down a WrestleMania main event, and more stars that have warranted their shot at the big time.

Edge shouldn’t be used to hold down a brand in today’s era, not as champion at least. Sure, put over some of the roster, tick off a few dream matches here and there, but defeating a guy like Drew McIntyre or whichever ‘young stud’ happens to be champion after the Rumble is no better than Hogan-era WCW.

What are your thoughts on Edge’s Rumble return? Should he go on to become a two-time winner? Let us know in the comments.
