Yesterday, Psyonix made the announcement that their popular multiplayer car football title, Rocket League, will be making the leap to free to play in celebration of the game’s fifth anniversary. As such, the game will also become an Epic Games Store exclusive, due to the studio being acquired by Epic Games last year. Once it goes free to play, it’ll be unavailable to download via Steam, but if you’ve already purchased the game on Steam, you can still play via Valve’s launcher.

The official announcements states that the free to play update will include a number of changes to the way tournaments and challenges work, along with some refinement for the menus. Most importantly, this update will introduce cross-progression to the game, meaning you’ll be able to take your inventory with you no matter which platform you’re playing on.

Anyone who plays the game between now and when it goes free to play will unlock all Rocket League-branded DLC released beforehand, an “Est. 20XX” title that displays when your first year of Rocket League began, 200+ Common items that have been upgraded to “Legacy” quality, the Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels and the Huntress Player Banner. For those who have played the game before this announcement, you will unlock the Faded Cosmos Boost.
