Resident Evil 3 Players Lagging Behind Resident Evil 2 on Steam

Also not quite as well received.

The recent Resident Evil 3 remake, while still popular, isn’t posting as great player numbers on Steam compared to last year’s Resident Evil 2.

As noted by VG247, Resident Evil 3’s launch weekend managed a peak of 60,293 players compared to Resident Evil 2’s 74,227. That’s a significant drop, made perhaps even worse by the fact that everyone is now indoors.

There could be a million reasons behind this, perhaps the most prominent one being that 3 was always the least popular game in the original trilogy. On top of that, reception has been frostier for Resident Evil 3 with it only managing a Mostly Positive rating on Steam from 10,000 reviews so far. Resident Evil 2 has the fabled rating of Overwhelmingly Positive for comparison.

Common complaints about Resident Evil 3 include its length (you can hop and skip pretty stress-free through it in five hours on your first attempt) and it lacking a lot of content from the original. The iconic Clock Tower is nowhere to be seen along with modes like Mercenaries cut from the experience entirely. Capcom’s replacement, Resistance, hasn’t exactly been setting tongues wagging, either.

Having played and reviewed the game, I can see why some fans may be reticent to pick it up, though I very much enjoyed my time with it overall. It just doesn’t represent as great value as its remake predecessor, and while it’s great while it lasts, there should be more of it.

Perhaps Capcom will be adding free DLC to Resident Evil 3 as they did for 2, so maybe sentiment will become more positive for the game over time. It’s also worth noting that these are just PC figures, which isn’t really the home of the franchise despite all the mods. Let’s wait and see for some figures from its PS4 and Xbox One versions.

You never know, it could be that New Horizons is consuming everyone’s life too much to play other games.
